Explantation of Implants
Breast reconstruction following a mastectomy can be an important step toward normalcy in the life of a breast cancer patient. Fighting and recovering from cancer can take such a physical and emotional toll on a patient that any further complications can be devastating. The explantation, or removal, of a breast implant after a reconstructive surgery can be expensive and draining to a patient who has already gone through so much.
If you believe that the use of AlloDerm contributed to your post-operative complications, you may be able to seek compensation for your negative experience. AlloDerm tissue matrices are often used in breast reconstructions, but they have a history of failure which can lead to infection and explantation of implants. What Is Explantation?
Explantation involves the removal of a breast implant after a reconstructive surgery. Explantation can be necessary for a variety of reasons, but it is often a result of infection in the surgical site. A study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Meeting in 2009 reported that patients whose reconstructive surgeries involved the use of the product AlloDerm experienced a significantly higher percentage of the gathering of infected fluid and explantation as a result of the infection. Explantation can have the following dangerous risks:
- Harmful reaction to anesthesia
- Further infection from surgery
- Scarring
Any further surgery that is required due to AlloDerm failure can be costly and invasive. Victims of AlloDerm failure may be able to seek compensation to help with recovery.
