Why was AlloDerm recalled?
In September 2005, the LifeCell Corporation and the Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall of AlloDerm. This recall was announced after questions were raised about BioMedical Tissue Services (BTS), one of the companies that supplied LifeCell with donated tissue.
The allegations made against BTS concerned their medical documentation. Specifically, there was concern that BTS was illegally taking tissue from cadavers without obtaining permission from donors while they were alive. This lack of documentation also called into question the safety of the tissue that BTS was harvesting.
