What is a Hernia?
With all the hubbub regarding the Kugel Mesh hernia patch and the serious problems to which it's been linked, we thought it would be worth the time to take a look at the underlying medical conditions that led to this burgeoning controversy. There are really two medical issues that are related to the hernia patch - the hernia and the incisional hernia. Below is a description of each.
The Hernia
A hernia is basically a protrusion, or encroachment, of either a piece of tissue, a muscle or an organ that that bursts through the muscular tissue or the membrane that's meant to contain it safely. Hernias are quite painful and can appear in several locations around the body. In the most severe cases, hernias are extremely unsightly and can appear to be as large as a grapefruit or even a watermelon that's stuck to the outside of the body.
A hernia forms when there is a weakness on the outer-lying tissue that's supposed to contain the area within an enclosed area, and hernias can develop quickly or over a long period of time. Eventually, that weakness splits and creates an opening through which the internal tissue passes.
The Incisional Hernia
The incisional hernia is more of a byproduct of the hernia itself. When a hernia is repaired, the procedure involves placing the protruding tissue back into the area in which it belongs, and then the weakness in the surrounding tissue that led to the split is repaired by stitching the area in an attempt to strengthen it so that the hernia does not redevelop and create the need for additional hernia surgeries.
However, not all incisional hernias are the direct result of a hernia operation. Almost any type of abdominal procedure, which is the area of the body where the majority of hernias develop, can lead to the development of an incisional hernia based on the weakening of the incisional area that was opened or widened during the procedure.
The Patch
The Kugel Mesh hernia patch was developed to help aid in the healing of incisional hernias, as it was supposed to help strengthen the repaired area and ease what's often intense pain after the operation has occurred. However, due to a malfunction in several of the Kugel Mesh hernia patch product lines, serious complications developed in patients that led to debilitating injuries and even death in some cases.
