The Kugel Mesh Patch Comes Under Scrutiny
Medical science is constantly advancing, and that includes efforts being made on several fronts. One of the central components of this advancement concerns patients' recoveries from surgery, as history has shown a tendency for these patients to develop hernias in areas where an incision was made on their bodies. These hernias can present difficult physical challenges, which is why a relatively recent advance made towards treating these hernias hit the market with a high degree of promise.
The Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch
Davol, Inc., a subsidiary of C.R. Bard, Inc. recently released a new product onto the market known technically as the Bard® Composix® Kugel® Mesh Patch. This patch was formulated and intended to repair incisional hernias caused by the stretching or thinning of scar tissue that formed after surgery.
Specifically, the Kugel Mesh patch was placed behind the hernia with a small incision. The innovative quality behind the patch was that it could be "folded" into a smaller size during its implant, which allowed doctors to use smaller incisions than had been previously used to treat hernias.
After its incision, the Kugel Mesh patch was "opened" to its full size with a "memory recoil ring" that acted like a spring. This "spring" opened the patch after being placed behind the hernia to its full size and allowed the patch to lay flat behind the incision.
Problems Arise
Beginning in December of 2005, problems with this patch began to be reported, including entries on the FDA's Web site. Specifically, statistics began to show that the "memory recoil ring" showed a potential for breaking under pressure after it was implanted into patients. This problem persisted to the point where several notices were released by the FDA, and eventually several recalls of this product were initiated.
The injuries that resulted from this product failure were generally severe in nature. Examples of these injuries include bowel perforations, which lead to internal bleeding inside the patient's abdomen, and a condition known as "intestinal fistulae," which results from abnormal connections or passageways between the intestines and other organs. This condition can lead to a total breakdown of several organs and processes critical to the maintenance of health.
