Low BMI linked to high mortality rate after surgery

Posted on December 8th, 2011 No Comments

Patients in the low range of the body mass index, BMI, who undergo surgery are more inclined to die within 30 days of the procedure than patients in the moderately overweight range of the BMI.

According to an analysis, a BMI of 23.1 is associated with more deaths than a BMI of 26.3 to 29.6. People who had a BMI of over 23.1 had about the same 30-day mortality risk than those who could be classified as morbidly obese.

There were, however, certain situations where the mortality rate for morbidly obese patients was higher than average patients. These surgeries include hernia repair surgery as well as mastectomies because the surgeon has to have distinctive experience.

AlloDerm is commonly used in hernia repair surgeries and has been linked to several side effects. If you have suffered a side effect due to the use of AlloDerm, please contact the AlloDerm lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.
