Study shows hip disorder could raise risk of sports hernias

Posted on August 2nd, 2012 No Comments

Individuals who have the hip disorder, femoral acetabular impingement, are more susceptible to sustaining a sports hernia, according to a new study.

The study, which was conducted in the orthopedics department at the University of Virginia, involved 43 patients who had undergone sports hernia repair surgery between 1999 and 2011. Of the patients that were part of the study, 86 percent of them had a variation of the hip disorder, femoral acetabular impingement.

The stress that this type of hip disorder places on the groin area increases the chances of someone suffering from a sports hernia, according to the results of the study.
