What is a Hernia?

Posted on February 4th, 2011 No Comments

A hernia is caused by a tissue protruding through a struck or a part of an organ through muscle tissue.

The abdomen is the most common place for hernias to occur in humans. A part of the abdominal wall is weak and allows a localized hole to develop. As the hole develops, tissue or abdominal organs may begin to protrude from the hole.

In most cases a hernia will occur when the compartment which envelopes an organ receives increased pressure, weakening the boundary.

There are many different treatments for a hernia. A general practitioner may initially try to manually push the hernia back, removing the organ or tissue from the muscle defect. in many cases surgery is required to repair a hernia. During the operation a surgeon will put the protrusion back. If the protrusion is through a large enough defect a synthetic mesh may be fixed to the muscle to strengthen the area.
