AlloDerm: Then and Now

Posted on August 10th, 2011 No Comments

AlloDerm is a type of skin graft known as a dermal matrix, which has been linked to a number of failures.

The AlloDerm acellular cadaveric dermal matrix was released in 1995. LifeCell Corporation announced the culturing of human neonatal foreskin keratinocytes for use in the AlloDerm graft on May 16, 1995. The neonatal foreskins on AlloDerm are used to form a fully differentiated epidermal skin layer which can be successfully grafted to a model.

The company originally championed the AlloDerm product saying that research demonstrated the potential for generating a durable, off-the-shelf cultured skin graft product which, according to the president and chief executive officer of LifeCell, exhibited “reduced complications.”

In recent years however, the AlloDerm product has been associated with a number of failures. The repair patches have also been linked to a high rate of secondary surgeries.
