Laparoscopic hernia procedures show signs of fewer complications

Posted on March 22nd, 2012 No Comments

A study conducted by researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands reveals that individuals who underwent laparoscopic hernia procedures instead of traditional hernia repair surgeries saw less recurrences and complications after five years.

Laparoscopic procedures to treat hernias can be conducted two different ways. One way is for surgeons to fix the hernia by using a laparoscopic approach to access a small opening in the patient. The other way is carried out through a 2.5 inch opening in the groin area of the patient. Both of these procedures require general anesthesia for the patient.

The study consisted of 660 individuals suffering from hernias. These patients were divided into two groups, the laparoscopic procedure group and the traditional hernia repair surgery group. All of the patients were males, roughly around the age of 55. After five years, the researchers determined that 15 percent of the patients in the laparoscopic group reported chronic pain, as compared to 28 percent of the individuals who underwent the traditional surgery. Recurrences of hernias were also lower in the laparoscopic group of individuals.

Surgical mesh is a common tool used in traditional hernia repair surgeries. AlloDerm is a surgical mesh brand that has been linked to several side effects in individuals.
