New mesh tool to help repair abdominal hernias

Posted on April 22nd, 2013 No Comments

Whenever people have organ, intestinal, or gynecological problems, they often have to undergo surgeries to correct the ailment afflicting them. To perform these surgeries, surgeons usually cut down the midline to open the abdominal cavity. However, studies show that in the U.S., 10 percent of the 1 million midline incision surgeries are likely to result in a hernia.

Fortunately, a new tool to help make hernia repairs more sustainable is being introduced by surgeons. Through a medical technique known as “abdominal component separation,” a sterile pig skin biologic mesh is used to help facilitate longer-lasting hernia repair.

The biologic mesh is much healthier, as its inclusion inside the body is natural, whereas prosthetic mesh tends to be prone to infections and is more likely to fail.

It is recommended for patients who are more likely to develop infections, such as those who are obese, to obtain these types of hernia repairs.

While certain hernia patches, such as the one described above, have been found to be successful, there are, unfortunately, many other hernia patches that do not have the same success. In fact, Alloderm is one such type of patch that often causes greater harm than good to patients. For those who have been victimized by the use of Alloderm, an attorney from Williams Hart may be able to help. Call 800-761-3187 to find out if you are eligible to pursue financial compensation.
