The Basics of Hiatal Hernias

Posted on May 15th, 2013 No Comments

A person’s diaphragm performs an essential function by separating their heart and lungs from their abdomen. An opening, which is called a “hiatus,” in the diaphragm helps the esophagus reach the stomach, allowing for proper food absorption and digestion. However, sometimes a part of the stomach becomes wedged in this opening, preventing food and other digestive substances from completing their usual route and causing an inflammation to the affected area. This is known as a hiatal hernia and can lead to serious complications, which if not remedied quickly can lead to the development of cancerous changes.

To be fully cured of a hiatal hernia, surgery is often the only method; however, if you’re opting for a more temporary solution, you can try an acid-blocking medication.

Many hernia patients have sought a way to remedy their health problems by using AlloDerm hernia patches. However, it has been found that there are a lot of negative side effects to using this patch. If you or someone you know has experienced discomfort or further illness because of using AlloDerm, the legal team at Williams Kherker may be able to help you pursue compensation. Call 800-761-3187 to discuss your case.
