Understanding Post-Surgical Infections

Posted on January 21st, 2011 No Comments

An abscess is a collection of pus that has accumulated in a tissue cavity due to an infection.

Abscesses are a defensive reaction by the tissue to prevent the spread of infection materials to other parts of the body. Abscesses may also form as a result of foreign materials in the tissue. The bacteria or foreign materials kill local tissue cells which release signaling protein molecules called cytokines. The cytokines trigger an inflammatory response, which increases the regional blood flow and draws a large number of white blood cells to prevent the spread of infection.

The white blood cells turn to pus which becomes trapped by the abscess wall, or capsule.

The abscess wall is formed by healthy cells around the infected area to contain the pus and prevent infection of neighboring structures.

If you have developed an abscess, or a post-surgical infection, following an AllowDerm procedure, you may be entitled to compensation. For more information on AlloDerm lawsuits, please contact the AlloDerm Attorneys of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187.
